Development of a dual-sensor penetrometer for simultaneous measurement of cone index and soil moisture content

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As a relatively new technique, a combined capacitance-penetrometer for the simultaneous measurement of cone index and soil water content was developed at the Department of Agricultural Engineering of Bonn University in 2002. The developed dual-sensor employed capacitance technique and a capacitor sensor was integrated into the penetration cone. In general, this dual sensor penetrometer has several advantages over the penetrometers combined with TDR or infrared sensor: (i) rapid response for continuous measurement, (ii) low cost, (iii) relative robustness in terms of geometrical structure.
Besides this vertical dual sensor penetrometer, a horizontal dual sensor was tested in the summer of 2003. Like other dual sensor penetrometers developed, it is expected to simultaneously measure soil water content and bulk density in situ. However, although a variety of the dual sensor penetrometers have been developed over the past decade, the decomposition and interpretation of the dual signals still are problematic at present. Therefore, the further study will aim at a deeper understanding of the correlation among soil physical parameters and a sensor array penetrometer.
